A Guide to Chemical Protection Levels in Cleanroom Garments

A Guide to Chemical Protection Levels in Cleanroom Garments

Why is Chemical Protective Clothing Important?

Chemical protective clothing is essential for those who come into contact with chemical hazards. As it is not always apparent when there is a chemical exposure and since many pose invisible risks, it is critical for workers to be shielded effectively. A risk assessment of the environment and identification of potential exposure should always be carried out. This determines the garments that are required and what level of protection is needed.

What do the different standards and protection types mean?

Depending on the task and environment, different levels of protection will be required.
In regulation terms, Chemical Protective Clothing belongs to the same group as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It is therefore required to comply with European Directive 89/686/CE, which classifies PPE into three categories:

Within Category III, there are various levels of protection. These include:

In some instances, a pictogram may be used to denote the safety standard. The below table breaks down the pictograms and their meanings:

What are some examples of Chemical Protective Clothing?

In addition to PPE such as face shields, respirators and chemical resistant glasses/goggles, workers should consider coveralls, oversleeves, hoods, and overboots/shoe covers where appropriate.

  • Coveralls: Coveralls can be worn in various industries, and can be made from polyethylene fabric for a high level of protection that is still comfortable. As always, it is crucial to examine the environment before choosing a coverall to ensure the adequate level of protection. For example, a polymeric barrier coating can offer good permeation protection against inorganic chemicals and biological hazards.
  •  Oversleeves: These are suitable for applications when partial body chemical protection is required. Oversleeves offer protection against liquids, light oils and light sprays of liquid chemicals and are available in various materials such as PVC and polyethylene.
  • Hoods: Protective Hoods can be worn in addition to a labcoat/jacket for extra protection against sprays and splashes. On certain models, elastication features around the face hem and neck to ensure permeation is minimised. Hoods with visors also offer added protection to the face without affecting visibility.
  • Overboots/Shoe Covers: These are often slip-resistant, with elastication to ensure that they remain securely in place whilst moving around. Overboots and shoe covers can be used in conjunction with coveralls to offer the user complete full-body protection.
